To Complete a Basic Search for Funders (Prospect Research)
UVa has an institutional account with Foundation Directory Online that works across Grounds and requires no individual account or login. To access, simply go to the following link: https://fconline.foundationcenter.org/ipl.php

If you know the name of your funder, enter it in the search box or click on Search by Organization below the “search” button. (Tip: names of funders will need to be entered without the word “The” at the beginning in the Search by Organization field.)

To look up by keyword or subject area you can either:

type your word or phrase into the search box and FDO will attempt to match it to defined subject areas, or

Click on Advanced Search & Filters, just above the SEARCH button to use the Subject Area field for your search. [Tip: You may need to try variations of a term (ex. “elder” and “elderly” and “geriatric”) to come up with a matching Subject Area – think in very broad terms].

When using Subject Area

You can find terms in two ways:

by clicking in the blank search box and choosing from the list which drops down, or
-
by typing in a term and seeing if the search menu loads it as a Subject Area

Once you’ve selected multiple terms you’ll be able to use the drop down menu just above the search box to:

Match Any where search results match any listed subject areas, or
-
Match All where search results must include all listed subject areas

Click SEARCH button to generate search results.

A search may be modified at any time in the search fields at the top of the results page.
